Motor insurance

Protected on the road – for others and for your own vehicle.

Motor liability is compulsory. Comprehensive cover, assistance and legal expenses determine which own costs remain after accident, theft or natural event.

Insurance sections

From compulsory minimum cover to comprehensive protection.

Vehicle value, use, financing and personal risk capacity determine the suitable scope.

Liability

Damage to third parties

Bodily injury, property damage and financial loss arising from use of the vehicle.

Partial comprehensive

Specified events

Theft, fire, natural perils, glass and animal collision depending on terms.

Full comprehensive

Own accident damage

Additionally covers self-caused accident damage and often vandalism.

Assistance

Help on the road

Breakdown, towing, replacement vehicle, return travel and accommodation within agreed limits.

Occupant accident

People in the vehicle

Additional accident benefits, taking liability and social benefits into account.

Motor legal expenses

Legal costs

Damages, criminal defence and driving-licence proceedings relating to road use.

Policy comparison

Compare more than premium and excess.

01

Current and replacement value

Review settlement basis and time scales.

02

Gross negligence

Compare waivers of reduction and remaining exceptions.

03

Repairer network

Balance premium advantage against free repairer choice.

04

Accessories

Record accessories, charging cables, wallbox and modifications adequately.

Claims practice

Accident report, photographs and duties to cooperate matter.

Even apparently clear losses may depend on sequence, driver, alcohol, police involvement and repair authorisation.

Accident scene

Secure evidence

Take photographs and record the accident, parties and witnesses.

Notification

Complete and truthful

State the sequence, driver and official measures correctly.

Repair

Await authorisation

Clarify inspection, repairer network, total loss and salvage before repair.

Our role: We support liability and comprehensive claims and ensure that event description, evidence and repair process are consistent.

OGH 7 Ob 170/23k

Is every paint scratch a comprehensive-insurance accident?

The actual sequence, a sudden external impact and the contractual accident definition are decisive. Calling an event an “accident” in everyday language is not enough.

OGH 7 Ob 140/24z

Vehicle theft and eased burden of proof

A typical sequence, such as properly parking a vehicle and later finding it missing, may initially support proof of theft, but contradictions and counter-indications remain relevant.

OGH 7 Ob 43/98v

Leaving an accident scene and duties to cooperate

Leaving the scene may breach contractual duties to clarify the event. This can have insurance consequences even if the criminal-law assessment differs.

Frequently asked questions

Key motor-insurance questions.

All questions
What does motor liability pay?

It pays justified third-party claims and defends unjustified claims.

When is full comprehensive cover useful?

Especially for a high-value or financed vehicle, or where a major own loss should not be self-funded.

Is gross negligence always covered?

No. Scope and exceptions vary; alcohol, drugs and certain duties commonly remain problematic.

May repairs start immediately?

For comprehensive claims, insurer authorisation or the agreed inspection should be awaited.
